San Gabriel Valley Orchid Hobbyists invite you to their Feb. 21, 2019 monthly meeting at the L.A. County Arboretum Palm Room at 301 N. Baldwin Ave. in Arcadia. Judging will begin at 7 p.m. and the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker Dylan Hannon, curator of the Conservatory and tropical collections at the Huntington Library, will cover his travels in Colombia, Amazonia as well as the Choco bioregion of the Pacific slope.
Because of its wide range of habitats, from alpine bogs to dry savannahs to rainforests receiving over ten meters of rain annually, Colombian plant life is correspondingly varied. Hannon will include highlights on Acacallis, unusual Pleurothallis, Anguloa (with pollinator), and remarkable variation in classics such as Cattleya warscewiczii. Colombia is also home to a sophisticated horticultural trade, including orchids, both for export and domestic consumption.
Refreshments will be provided at the meeting. All are welcome to attend.
